Echo Park Sake Bar

Interior Design
Branding
Visual Identity

A long time collaborator (see Camelia, and Tsubaki) and one of our favorite places in Echo Park, sake bar and izakaya Ototo was a truly full scope project. The holistic approach encompassed the full interior architecture – transforming the space from a former barbershop – and a comprehensive brand identity. The interior design features custom designed furniture, and a selection of fixtures and fabrics – some from Japan. The  shou sugi ban charred wood and white oak finishes create a sophisticated backdrop.

Balancing this refined aesthetic is a playful and memorable brand, anchored by an original (unnamed, ungendered) cat mascot who extends across all touchpoints, from the signage and menu design to the manga-inflenced website (ototo.la) and social media, creating an expierence that reflects both the expertise of the owners/staff and their warm and welcoming presence.

The transformation of the former barbershop into Ototo involved a complete interior overhaul. Key elements include custom space planning and the design and fabrication of all furniture. Unique fixtures and fabrics, including Japanese textiles, add character, while the shou sugi ban bar front and custom white oak create a distinctive aesthetic.

The menu design for Ototo offers a unique approach to navigating their sake list. Playful illustrations accompany tasting notes, offering a visual interpretation of flavors and aromas. Additionally, the cover features a beautiful illustration that demystifies the sake-making process for guests.

The brand for Ototo is infused with playful charm, largely thanks to its beloved original cat mascot. This character’s engaging presence in numerous scenarios has made it a favorite among diners. The brand’s distinct personality is also expressed through a custom hand-drawn typeface.
